Jesus said, "The greatest among you will be your servant. "
Who do you think is the greatest among you?
Jesus said, the answer is, "your servant."
Is this the answer you would be expecting? Is this your answer, too?
And Jesus didn't stop there in bashing the image of greatness as people perceive it. He continued. " And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." (Matthew 23:11-12)
The exalted humbled... the humble exalted...
I love my hometown team, the Cubs. I really do think they're a great team. Well, this year, at least. They won the World Series!
But, if man decides who is the greatest, than Jesus' answer, "The greatest among you will be your servant," would not matter.
But that answer matters! It changes everything about how we look at greatness. God, who created all of the world, is the decider of all truth, and then decides by His authority as the final judge of all -- who is the greatest. It's not man deciding, not any person deciding, the final judge is God. And God said greatness is in humility.
"Who is the greatest among you?" A servant.
